Research Statement: My research involves the substantiation that bone marrow derived cells have an immunoregulatory capacity that can influence the induction of clinical tolerance (the elimination of maintenance immunosuppressive drugs). This includes the development of sophisticated monitoring techniques to detect the immune status of the recipient and the appearance of these regulatory cells in the bone marrow, peripheral blood, and transplanted organ in the recipient. I am currently conducting a clinical trial at Northwestern in 20 such HLA-identical living donor kidney transplant recipients of donor stem cells, along with the transplanted organ, and following the recipient for the detection of these immune regulatory functions.
