Research Statement: We are currently involved in research on: The topology of solid-liquid mixtures. We have developed the hardward and software to make and analyze three-dimensional reconstructions of microstructures; Quantum dot formation on surfaces. We examine the conditions governing island formation on semiconductor surfaces; Growth of nanowires by the vapor-liquid-solid mechanism; The morphology of solid-oxide fuel cells. We are examining the morphology of these structures using three dimensional reconstructions; Magnetic dot formation on surfaces. The goal is to produce nanometer scale dots on surfaces that can be used for information storage; Fluid flow in mushy zones in single crystal jet turbine castings. We are using three dimensional reconstructions of the microstrutures to understand the manner in which fluid flows through these two phase mixtures; We are using phase field methods to develop models for three dimensional grain growth in solids that employ experimental data as an initial condition.
