William L Lowe Jr

Research Statement: The Lowe lab has two areas of research interest. One area of study is the genetics of maternal glycemia during pregnancy and fetal growth and their interaction. A cohort of ~13,000 mothers and their babies are being used in genome wide association and related studies to define genetic variation affecting these traits. A second area of study is the development of bioactive materials to enhance islet transplantation. These studies are being conducted in the context of a research team that includes islet biologists, bioengineers and transplant surgeons. In related studies, the mechanisms for islet expansion during pregnancy are being examined to define mechanisms for islet cell expansion.
