His work has been important in shaping our understanding of the impact of cataract on the results of visual field testing in glaucoma patients as well as in the development of new methods to accurately detect worsening of the visual field. He has also conducted research aimed at improving the outcome of incisional glaucoma surgery. New studies in collaboration with biomedical engineers involves the use of hydrogel polymers to prevent excessive fibrosis after trabeculectomy. His recent collaborative work with geneticists led to the discovery that SNPs located in the ANGPT1 region are associated with primary open-angle glaucoma.
