His research focuses on health-care economics and the industrial organization of the health-care market. He has studied the consequences of horizontal and vertical changes in market structure in a number of health-care sectors, the reactions of nonprofit hospitals to wealth shocks, and the effects of the macroeconomy on health-care spending.
