Personal profile

Research Interests

I was raised and attended high school in Boulder, Colorado. I studied economics and Spanish at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana until 2004, where I played on the tennis team and played piano in the jazz ensembles. I served in the Peace Corps in El Salvador with the Rural Health and Sanitation Program from 2006-08. I earned an MD/MPH from the University of Colorado, and completed residency in pediatrics from the University of Chicago in 2016.

My main research interests are in various fields of global health. My current projects include an evaluation of the effectiveness and impact of a Helping Babies Breathe program in Ghana, and a calculation of the cost-effectiveness and economic benefit of a charitable surgical center in Honduras. The Helping Babies Breathe program teaches basic newborn resuscitation techniques to birth attendants in low-resource settings. We are currently testing the students in Ghana at various intervals of time to evaluate their retention of the material, and evaluating the program's impact by recording what degree of resuscitation measures are performed on the newborns on which the students use their skills. The Holy Family Surgery Center outside Tegucigalpa, Honduras, performs general, orthopedic, and many other surgeries with volunteer surgeons from Surgical Care Affiliates. We are currently evaluating the center's cost-effectiveness and economic impact on the Honduran population.

My clinical focus consists of several clinical services staffed by pediatric hospital-based medicine. These include the neonatal intensive care unit, NICU delivery and consult team, pediatric intensive care unit, and the medical observation unit.
