Professor Ruan's interests span statistics, optimization and machine learning. His current research work focuses on developing rigorous understanding of how to better design statistical models that are amenable to local algorithms. He is also interested in developing theory and algorithms for problems under resource constraints, for stochastic optimization and for problems in high dimensional statistics.
