Research Interests

Dr. Gupta is a Professor of Pediatrics and Medicine at Northwestern Medicine and has more than 15 years of experience as a board-certified pediatrician and health researcher. Dr. Gupta is the director of the Science and Outcomes of Allergy and Asthma Research Team (SOAAR) and is a clinical attending at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital Chicago, where she is actively involved in clinical, epidemiological, and community-based research. She is nationally recognized for her groundbreaking research in the areas of food allergy and asthma epidemiology; specifically her research on childhood food allergy prevalence. She has also significantly contributed to academic research surrounding economic costs, pediatric management of food allergy and asthma, ED visits and hospitalizations, quality of life and community interventions, especially in schools. Along with being an author of The Food Allergy Experience, Dr. Gupta has over 100 publications and her work has been featured in major TV networks and print media.

Dr. Gupta has mentored numerous individuals at various training levels including high school students, undergraduates, medical students, residents, fellows, and junior faculty. She currently provides 20% clinical effort as an attending for a Lurie Children’s Hospital Resident Clinic. Most of her teaching occurs informally in clinic and with my mentees. She also serves as a guest lecturer at Northwestern University classes when requested. One of the most fulfilling roles she have is mentoring and inspiring students, residents, fellows and young faculty. She believes that the three pillars to be a successful researcher include passion, funding, and good mentorship. Dr. Gupta plans to continue her efforts and grow this role in the years to come.

Regarding clinical care, Dr. Gupta has published on strategies to improve primary care management of both food allergy and asthma. Within the area of community health, she and her team have published some the largest studies on quality of life in food allergy as well as on labeling, risk-taking and school policies of epinephrine. She has also developed and published data on school programs to empower students with asthma to improve their management and educate their communities.
