Research Interests

Dr. Khan is board certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Diseases and holds active medical licensure in the state of Illinois. She received her medical degree from the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University in 2009 as part of the Honors Program in Medical Education. She completed her internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, IL in 2012 and then served as Chief Medical Resident from 2012-2013. She also obtained her master’s degree in Clinical Investigation from the Northwestern University Graduate School in 2014. Dr. Khan completed her fellowship in cardiovascular diseases at Northwestern in 2016 followed by a post-doctoral fellowship in cardiovascular epidemiology in 2017 before joining the Northwestern faculty. She has received multiple awards for excellence in research, teaching, and patient care.

My laboratory examines the influence of obesity on development of cardiovascular diseases. Our studies include population-based cohorts, large electronic health record data analysis, and -OMICS (epigenomics, genomics, and proteomics) to perform mechanistic studies to enhance cardiovascular risk prediction and identify novel therapeutic agents for prevention and treatment approaches. As a practicing cardiologist, I see patients at-risk for and with cardiovascular disease. I am trained in cardiovascular and molecular epidemiology and cardiovascular genetics. I am committed to translating research into clinical practice through use of implementation science principles to improve cardiovascular outcomes and care on an individual-level and population-level.

I see patients with a variety of cardiovascular diseases and to discuss preventive strategies prior to the development of cardiovascular diseases with a particular focus among patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). I am also interested in practicing precision or personalized medicine with a particular focus on the utility of genetic testing and risk communication with patients who are at-risk for cardiomyopathy, arrhythmia, and vascular disorders (e.g. aortic aneurysm). As a staff cardiologist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and member of the Bluhm Cardiovascular Center, I serve on the inpatient cardiology consult service and conduct weekly ambulatory clinic sessions.
