Research Interests

Dr. Krogh-Jespersen is a developmental psychologist whose overarching interest is the early emergence of social competence skills, with a specific focus on intentional understanding during the first years of life. She examines infants’ ability to recruit social information from others and her work integrates divergent streams of research on infant cognition and socio-emotional development, driven by the guiding principle that infants attend to and integrate information from their environment to generate appropriate, contingent social responses that facilitate further social interaction. An innovation of her work has been to look beyond measuring infants’ social competence via correct vs. incorrect responses (i.e., an all-or-none approach); rather, Dr. Krogh-Jespersen aims to capitalize on the variability in infants’ responses to understand the developmental trajectory of intentional understanding to inform what is viewed as typical development and what may be an atypical trajectory. Dr. Krogh-Jespersen utilizes behavioral and eye-tracking methodologies to explore infants’ early reasoning about social information. Importantly, the methodologies she implements are based on the inherent abilities of the infant, for example, using eye-tracking when an infant’s motor repertoire would not accurately reflect implicit knowledge. A guiding principle of her work is that precise measurement is key to understanding early growth in developmental trajectories.
