Personal profile

Research Interests

I am interested in computational medicine and specifically pharmacoalgorithmics, informally defined as "the study of what the drug prescription does to the patient." Drug therapy is more than just drugs, it includes the instructions for safely and effectively using the drugs and the resources to support those instructions (e.g., nurses, pharmacists, physicians, infusion pumps, and drug concentration measurements). A prescription is a health-care program implemented by a physician or other qualified practitioner in the form of instructions that govern the plan of care for an individual patient. Working with a team of investigators, I showed that application of computer programming design and debugging methods results in a marked increase in the safety of opioid prescriptions in hospitalized adults. The methods we have developed in pharmacoalgorithmics have application to reducing the risk of adverse drug events, optimizing the efficacy of drug therapy, and reducing the cost of medical care.
