Acorn Genetics

Project: Research project

Project Details

Description

In the genetic testing field, there exists two options for a customer to receive a DNA test: either to pay thousands of dollars through the healthcare system due to most insurances' refusal to cover genetic testing, or go through existing DNA sequencing companies, who sell customer genetic information for a profit. We offer an alternative in which people can test themselves for a number of genetically linked diseases at an affordable price in the privacy of their own home. Acorn Genetics' patent pending sequencer, the AcornLab, comes as a response to the growing demand for privacy in genetics and healthcare in general. After dozens of customer discovery interview and hundreds of survey responses, we've discovered that 66% of those we spoke to were interested in genetic testing, but 49% of them cited privacy concerns as their reason for not testing. Acorn Genetics stands poised to serve this untapped market, and fundamentally disrupt the genetic testing market.
