Project Details
Description
This study is to test in vivo functionality of Bio-Engineered Micro-Pancreas (EMP) developed by Betalin Therapeutices, Ltd., in achieving and maintaining normoglycemia in a diabetic mouse model. The implantable EMP is composed of Micro Organ Matrix (MOM), a 3D bio-scaffold generated from porcine lung tissue that undergoes decellularization. that provides supportive micro-environment for long-term functioning of human islets containing beta cells producing insulin. The MOM when combined with islets generates a functional micro pancreas (EMP) that will be implanted subcutaneously, regulating blood glucose level in diabetic patients. Preliminary results already proved the validity of this approach. Before going into clinical trials in humans it is necessary to test the engineered organs in hyperglycemic mice.
The CTC Researchers will obtain pancreata from our local Organ Procurement Organization, Gift of Hope, and then perform islet isolation and purification under standard protocol, followed by EMP production using the innovative technology. The resulting EMPs will not be transplanted into humans, but will be implanted into small animal (mice).
