Description
CISTAR processes to produce liquid fuels are net carbon positive although they have the promise to be lower-emitting than conventional liquid fuels. CISTAR fuels are viewed as a bridge fuel – a transition between today’s petroleum fuels and tomorrow’s renewables-based fuels. CISTAR processes may also produce chemicals. Yet, given a growing emphasis on decarbonization of the fuels and chemicals sector and interest in achieving carbon neutral CISTAR products on the part of NSF, it is important to consider how the CISTAR process and, holistically, products produced via the CISTAR process, could be carbon neutral. Systems-level analyses that consider greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across the full supply chain are central to these considerations. The supply chain consists of 1) the CISTAR process 2) the final product and its use, and 3) the upstream production of NGLs. In this one-year scoping project, we will examine each of these supply chain elements, identifying data gaps and research questions along with preliminary quantitative results for GHG emissions ranges for each supply chain element. We will thereby establish a framework for full and robust quantitative analysis of pathways to carbon neutral CISTAR-process-derived fuels and chemicals.
