Clinical Utility of the Post-Concussion Symptom Scale and the School-Years Screening Test for Evaluation of Mental Status in the Evaluation of Grade School

Project: Research project

Project Details

Description

Dr. Lai will conduct necessary analyses for the following two primary objectives: 1. To evaluate the psychometric properties of the PCSS using the existing database of concussed patients seen at the Institute of Sports Medicine at Lurie Children’s Hospital (formally, Children’s Memorial Hospital, Chicago, CMH). Specifically, Dr. Lai will evaluate the unidimensionality of the PCSS items using factor analysis and calibrate items using Rasch analysis to establish optimal measure(s), which will be used for objective 2. 2. To validate PCSS and SYSTEMS tools by collecting an additional 200 patients (100 without concussion and 100 with concussion) recruited from community based clinics. Specifically, univariate and multivariate analysis will be used to compare the PCSS and SYSTEMS reports (total score and each individual item in each tool) between the two groups. Items that have the greatest significant difference between the two groups will be utilized to develop an assessment tool for school aged children for concussions for future studies.
