Project Details
Description
We propose to improve on the existing optimization model by: (i) working with sub-hourly time steps; (ii) incorporating information regarding plant performance into dispatch decisions; and (iii) modeling opportunities in both day-ahead and intra-day energy markets when optimizing dispatch policies. These enhancements will create a decision-making tool that (i) considers the system as a whole, making the appropriate trade-offs between short-term profit and long-term maintenance costs while accounting for electricity market opportunities at multiple time scales; (ii) standardizes operating procedures; and, (iii) produces software that can be implemented in the field and for real-time operations. This, in turn, will lead to an increased understanding among operators and utilities regarding the capabilities of CSP systems, an established standard for identifying and executing optimal operations schedules, and a decision-making tool with the capability of system-wide optimal determining minute-to-minute operating strategies.
