Detection of Circulating Tumor Nucleic Acids in the Circulatory System of Recurrent Glioblastoma Patients after Ultrasound-mediated Bloodbrain Barrier Opening

Project: Research project

Project Details

Description

Liquid biopsy is an emerging field with great potential in its ability to genotype and detect tumors non-invasively. Past attempts at detecting circulating biomarkers derived from glioblastoma within the blood have exhibited limited sensitivity, in part due to the protective blood-brain barrier (BBB). A recent study in mouse gliomas showed that ultrasonic BBB disruption enhances the detection of circulating tumor DNA. We will investigate whether BBB disruption by implantable skull ultrasound enhances the detection of circulating DNA and exosomes in patients with recurrent glioblastoma. We will investigate the biomarker properties of these nucleic acids for predicting response and progression.
