Early detection of Alzheimer's disease through the eye

Project: Research project

Project Details

Description

This proposal will address the challenge to find a valid tool that can reliably detect Alzheimer’s disease. Reliable diagnosis of early Alzheimer’s disease is an important milestone and an essential prerequisite before therapies can be targeted at early disease processes. Notably, there is evidence that early changes can be seen in the eye of AD patients, including loss of nerve fiber layer on OCT in early AD 5-7, as well as in amnestic MCI, hence there is sufficient anecdotal evidence supporting this study. In this proposal we want to systematically investigate whether the eyes can be used to detect early stages of AD.8
