Description
Paramyxoviruses are enveloped, non-segmented, single stranded negative-sense RNA viruses that comprise several significant human, animal, and plant pathogens with considerable health and economic impact globally. Grouped into two major subfamilies namely; Pneumovirinae and Paramyxovirinae, they cause diseases ranging from respiratory infections in humans to fatal encephalitis. Examples include, among others, mumps virus, measles virus, parainfluenza viruses 1–5(PIV 1-5), Nipah virus, Hendra virus, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), Newcastle disease virus (NDV), and human metapneumovirus.
