Project Details
Description
Subjects in EDIC will been seen annually for evaluation of the status of their diabetes and its complications. This will include assessment of medications used for the treatment of the diabetes and its complications, of hypertension, of hypercholesterolemia and other conditions. A history will be taken of medical events that have occurred since the last evaluation. A physical examination focusing on the complications of diabetes will be performed (blood pressure, heart, foot, vascular and neurological examinations). Laboratory assessments for hemoglobin A1c, kidney status, and lipid status and an electrocardiogram will also be carried out. Retinal photographs are performed every four years. All data will be sent to the central Coordinating Center at Georgetown University to be merged with data from the other EDIC centers. In this past year, we have completed the Ancillary Hearing Study and are currently working on the Ancillary C-peptide study. We anticipate starting the Hypoglycemia and Cardiac Arrhythmia Ancillary study in the coming year.
