Description
The Geographic Management Program (GMaP), funded through the National Cancer Institute’s Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities (CRCHD), is a national strategy to build critical regional “hubs” for the support and efficient management of cancer health disparities (CHD) research, training and infrastructure programs. Its goal is to build networks of academic and community organizations that are addressing or have the potential to address CHD by focusing on Training, Minority Biospecimens Science, Bioinformatics, Clinical Trials and Advanced and Emerging Technologies. The Region 4 GMaP network (formerly Region 5), called the Cancer Disparities Research Network (CDRN), is currently comprised of over 40 National Cancer Institute funded institutions located in 15 states (Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Massachusetts Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota and Wisconsin). Fox Chase Cancer Center has successfully served as the administrative lead for Region 4 GMaP since its inception six years ago. The CDRN has now grown into a vibrant and collegial collaboration between institutions and scientists across the region. With the support of a strong coordinating committee, the CDRN has undertaken several multi-PI, multi-institutional research projects resulting in scientific publications and presentations. Eleven institutions joined to adapt and test the Cancer 101 educational module on biospecimens research for 6 target populations (Black/AA, Hispanic/Latino, rural, Southeast Asian, Chinese and Native American). Five institutions are collaborating on a pilot Cancer Cohort study to build the bank of biospecimens from minority populations and four are collaborating on a recruitment communication tool. Over the past 2 years we have expanded our focus to build linkages between the many disparities-focused NCI-funded programs in the region and on growing the number of minority and underrepresented scientists engaged in CHD work, with a special focus on training, scholarships and mentoring opportunities for junior researchers. We continue to build on this collaborative approach and will develop a MSI and Tribal College networking initiative, engage all NCI cancer centers in the CDRN, and increase the number of diversity related grants from the region. We will continue to widely disseminate information on disparities-related research results, conferences and collaborative research possibilities, etc. through a CDRN website and listserv that has reaches more than 260 investigators.
