Graduate Student Work Order - Anirudh Ramesh: Quantum Entanglement Distribution over Deployed Fiber at Argonne

Project: Research project

Project Details

Description

We propose to establish a Quantum Local Area Network (Q-LAN) at Argonne and demonstrate entanglement distribution for different configurations. These demonstrations will help move the state of the art as fully functional quantum networks will rely on entanglement distribution as a basic communication service. We will leverage existing hardware and the fiber infrastructure at Argonne to create a loop from building 360 going into building 241/242 and coming back to 360. The following experimental steps are expected to be performed by the candidate: 1) Calibrate entanglement photon source (EPS) and SNSPDs at Q-LAN’s main node on building 360. 2) Characterize the fiber loop that will be used for the experiment. 3) Evaluate various techniques for entanglement distribution over the fiber loop including the use of optical circulators and Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) devices. The candidate should have deep knowledge in quantum optics, optical instrument calibration and characterization, and Python coding. All associated data, calculations and other results of this effort will be provided to Dr. Kettimuthu prior to the end of the contract period.
