Project: Research project

Project Details

Description

A service agreement of $420,241 over 2 ½ years would enable Northwestern University’s Civic Education Project to coordinate CivicWeek, a high-quality service-learning program, for full cohorts of Jack Kent Cooke Young Scholars in Summers 2015, 2016 & 2017. CivicWeek complements the Foundation’s goals for Scholars to reach their full potential through education, emphasizing their development as leaders and citizens. Through this weeklong service-learning program, each student will: • Learn about social issues that impact society through hands-on experience; • Contribute meaningfully to communities in need; • Gain valuable insight into career fields; • Develop stronger communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills; • Build lasting relationships with like-minded peers; • Earn service-learning credit hours; and • Discover ways to become more active leaders and citizens in their own schools and communities. Under this service agreement, the Civic Education Project will plan and implement all activities for the CivicWeek program, including: • Developing a weeklong program that meets CEP’s goals of promoting leadership and civic engagement, as well as appropriate Foundation interests; • Setting up and managing all of the curricular components of the program, including service sites, guest speakers, and recreational activities; • Coordinating all of the logistical components of the program, such as student and staff housing, meals, meeting space, travel, and on-site transportation; • Hiring and supervising well-trained, experienced staff and administrators to facilitate each program component, and training and engaging Jack Kent Cooke College Scholars to serve as junior staff members; • Ensuring that students, families and advisers are prepared and oriented before the program begins and receive appropriate documentation and follow-up afterwards; • Creating appropriate space for Foundation participation in the program
