Description
Overview:
This grant will fund a conference aimed at addressing gender imbalances within the mathematical sciences. The meeting is a weekend long conference for women undergraduates in the mathematical science, designed to encourage women studying mathematics in the USA to continue their mathematical education at the graduate level.
Titled Graduate Research Opportunities in Mathematics (GROW), the conference is modeled on the first two such conferences organized at Northwestern in October 2015 and October 2016, which attracted 50 undergraduates to the first one and 80 to the second. Participants came from across the mathematical sciences and a wide variety of institutions, and as in the previous iterations, GROW 2017 will combine research talks, panel discussions, mentoring in groups and individually, a banquet with speech by a keynote speaker, and networking opportunities.
We continue to build the framework for this activity to continue into the future, not only at Northwestern but also at other institutions.
Intellectual Merit:
The research talks during the conference exposes the participants to open problems at the frontiers of current research.
Broader Impact:
The long term goal of the conference is to increase the number of qualified women entering graduate school in the mathematical sciences.
