Description
Opportunity to Advance Diagnosis and Treatment of Atrial Stenosis and Mitral Regurgitation
In the attached addendum, we describe 3 groundbreaking projects that will advance the diagnosis and treatment of aortic stenosis and mitral regurgitation. It is our hope that the IDP Foundation will support these projects through the funding and establishment of competitive IDP Foundation Cardiac Research Innovation Grants. Furthermore, the hardware, software, and personnel infrastructure needed for these projects will form the basis for the Cardiovascular Imaging Laboratory. Establishment of the Cardiovascular Imaging Laboratory will allow us to compete successfully for future competitive grants from the National Institutes of Health, NASA, National Science Foundation, as well as industry. In this way, the value of the Foundation’s philanthropic investment will be multiplied many-fold going forward, while providing the optimal environment for training the clinicians and researchers of tomorrow.
Cardiovascular Imaging Laboratory
To undertake our studies, we will need to establish a Cardiovascular Imaging Laboratory and purchase imaging instrumentation, computer hardware, and software. As important, we will need funds for the experts who will execute the project and build the funding base for future initiatives. Specific resources needed for this effort include the following:
• Research echocardiograph with 3D transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) probes, plus 3 years of maintenance and upgrades.
• Pulsatile in vitro model to allow simulation of complex intracardiac flow while allowing careful imaging by echo and MRI. Drs. Alex Barker and Michael Markl have a partial solution that works for MRI, but echo can be very challenging due to sound reflection within plastic structures, requiring careful modification to serve both needs.
• Computer hardware, software, analog-to-digital converters, and high fidelity pressure monitors to allow acq
