HLA Epitopes in Organ Transplantation – Clinical Applications

Project: Research project

Project Details

Description

This research proposal is geared specifically to support work that is part of the research component of post-doctoral fellows in the Tambur lab that are in an HLA-Director-in-Training Program. The work is focused on different aspects of HLA antibodies in the context of solid organ transplantation and it is aimed to identify characteristics that may predict immunogenicity and antigenicity of donor / recipient HLA-mismatched combinations. The long term goal is to have tools that will help minimize development of do-novo donor-specific HLA antibodies (DSA) and therefore promote longer graft survival. This is particularly important for pediatric patients that are likely to need several transplants during their life span (an average half-life of a transplanted kidney is 10-15 years depending on whether this was a kidney from a deceased or a live donor). Patients that develop de-novo HLA-DSA are less likely to find future compatible donors, decreasing the probability of these pediatric patients to have a viable chance of receiving organ transplants when the need arises.
