Assessment of Competency in CBT

We wish to assess interns’ developing competency in intervention—Specifically, their ability to conduct CBT. This will be assessed using the Cognitive Therapy Scale-Revised (CTS-R; Blackburn, et al., 2001; Milne et al., 2001; Reichelt et al., 2003), an instrument commonly used in CBT training in England. The CTS-R was developed at the University of Newcastle, and addresses psychometric deficiencies of the older and more widely used CTRS (Young & Beck, 1980). Scales assessing CBT compliance and adherence are widely used in outcome research and in board certification credentialing by the Academy of Cognitive Therapy (ACT). The approach we have proposed for assessing interns’ competence in intervention is congruent with the APA Standards for Accreditation for Health Service Psychology training (SOA; APA, 2015). Specifically, this program supports the following internship accreditation requirements: • C1e (page 25) Intern performance evaluation and feedback • C1f (Page 25) Identification and remediation of insufficient competence • C1h (Page 25) Supervision • 2A2g (Page 27) Demonstration of competence in intervention • 2D1ai (Page 29) By the end of the Internship, each intern must demonstrate achievement of…competencies required….[with specification of] how it evaluates intern performance. The approach to competency assessment in intervention also is consistent with the following APA Implementation Guidelines (G&P): • B1a (Page 14) Model of professional training and….psychological practice [that] is based on the science of psychology. • B4a (Page 15) Interns demonstrate an intermediate to advanced level of professional psychological skills, abilities, proficiencies , competencies, and knowledge in the areas of …effective intervention (including empirically supported treatments).
