Description
Material Complexity Thrust
2.0 GS / Under the direction of Kenneth Poeppelmeier, work will include solid-state materials synthesis; fluxes and melts; hydrothermal synthesis; and synthesis from solutions in the Material Complexity Thrust. The objectives of the Thrust are to:
• Establish the role and relative hierarchy of the numerous variations of crystalline complexities as they contribute to and control intercalation processes, ion transport, and stability in a wide array of materials classes. We will achieve this by probing the interaction of ions with fabricated and modeled materials complexities using operando characterization and theory spanning numerous length scales.
• Develop and codify a mechanistic framework to guide formation of specific inorganic phases with tailored defect structures or other crystalline complexities. We will achieve this by navigating the compromises between thermodynamic stability and kinetic control with computation and in situ characterization, paying special attention to precursors or intermediate species.
