KAS Local News Workshop 2022

Project: Research project

Project Details

Description

Medill would work with KAS to organize, host and moderate a virtual workshop on July 26th highlighting four case studies of innovative new models for local news. This conference would spotlight four varying experiments in local news that are beginning to take root. Medill would work with KAS to identify those case studies, and then invite leaders from the four news organizations to present at the virtual conference in July. We’d ask those news outlets to share details of their entrepreneurial work, including what’s working and what’s not. The goal of this gathering would be to surface tangible, actionable ideas that could inspire local news experimentation at this existential moment for the industry and democracies. Each case study would include a presentation by the leadership team from the news organization. After each presentation, we would have a small contingent of industry experts and scholars briefly comment to provide context on that outlet’s experiment and how it could be applied elsewhere in the U.S. and around the world. Medill then would moderate a short Q&A to conclude each session. Each case study would last a total of one hour, with the bulk of the time given to the local news organizations themselves.
