Mastery Learning Right Heart Catheterization Simulation Program for Trainee Education

Project: Research project

Project Details

Description

Many bedside procedures are performed by inexperienced trainees in academic medical centers and can lead to serious complications. The mastery learning model and simulation training can improve trainees’ procedural competence and reduce complications. We propose a study to evaluate the efficacy of a mastery learning right heart catheterization simulation program to teach trainees pulmonary artery catheter insertion and interpretation of the obtained hemodynamic waveforms. We hypothesize that implementing the proposed curriculum into traditional training will improve technical skills, trainee confidence, interpretation of hemodynamic waveforms, and subsequently improve patient safety by reducing the time to procedure completion and iatrogenic injury.
