Description
We propose an innovative, leading-edge initiative to study metabolomic profiles that highlight the interplay of stress, social determinants of health, and adverse pregnancy outcomes among a prospective cohort of pregnant persons cared for within Northwestern Medical Group’s obstetric practices. Utilizing translational research and “big data” analytic methods, we will assess the metabolomic signatures most predictive of three leading causes of perinatal morbidity – preterm birth, preeclampsia, and fetal growth restriction – and disparities in nutritional, psychosocial, and neighborhood-level social determinants associated with these adverse outcomes. We anticipate our work will reveal improved diagnostic markers to identify individuals at highest risk of recurrence of these adverse outcomes. Our work will yield targets for both personalized medicine and public health preventive interventions to improve the quality of metabolic, psychosocial, and community health among pregnant persons across all socio-economic, racial, and gender identity backgrounds, both in our immediate community and across the globe.
