Microstructural Studies of Nb3Sn Coatings for SRF Cavities

Project: Research project

Project Details

Description

Due to limited microcopy capabilities at Fermilab, the PI has approached Professor David Seidman’s group at Northwestern University to collaborate on this work. A postdoctoral associate from Dr. Seidman’s group will spend one person-year (12 months) dedicated to study of Nb3Sn films from Fermilab, including the microscopy studies described above. The postdoctoral associate will engage closely with the PI, Dr. Posen, who will guide the studies and generate samples to perform microscopic analysis. The activities carried out by the postdoctoral associate may also include development of techniques to remove a small amount of material from the coatings without affecting their superconducting RF properties.Dr. Seidman will help to guide the materials science studies carried out by the postdoctoral associate.
