In this grant application the PI (Megan William, Univ. of Utah) proposes to investigate the role of kirrel3 in formation of synapses in the central nervous system. This grant proposes a variety of focused experiments to investigate the molecular mechanisms which kirrel3 control synaptogenesis. Further, the proposed experiments are also concerned with elucidating the mechanisms that mutant kirrel3 causes intellectual disabilities. These experiments are focused on several important and unanswered biological questions with detailed, informed, and targeted experimentation. The key component is that they lack is a discovery-based aspect which does not require the specific testing of candidate proteins or molecules. My contribution to this grant is to share my expertise and instrumentation to investigate the molecular interactions of kirrel3 in discovery mode with biochemical approaches and proteomic mass spectrometry-based analysis.
