MRI: Acquisition of A Single Crystal Diffractometer With A Silver Microsource and A Detector Optimized for Silver Radiation

Project: Research project

Project Details

Description

The requested Stoe STADIVARI single crystal diffractometer has the capacity to perform the advanced high energy diffraction measurements required for the in-situ/operando characterization techniques of modern materials. Access to high energy diffractometers is crucial for the research undertaken by the team of PIs, Northwestern community, and materials science. The only nearby available source of high energy diffraction is at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) which Northwestern makes extensive use of. The timing of this proposal is important because APS is scheduled for shut down in 2022 for one year due to upgrades. Having an on-site high energy instrument installed in 2019 will give enough time to NU researchers and nearby schools to transfer methodologies and protocols and avoid the suspension of their research for at least one year. Additionally, awarded beamtime at synchrotrons is precious where typically 3-7 days per year are allowed for the same user. Having an onsite instrument available for training users, screening materials, and narrowing down or optimizing experimental conditions that need to be used at the beamline will make experiments at synchrotrons more efficient.
