National Security Journalism

The Medill School of Journalism, Media, Marketing Communications requests $500,000, split evenly over 2016 and 2017, in renewed support from the Robert R. McCormick Foundation towards the National Security Journalism Initiative (NSJI). This renewed funding would enable NSJI to further expand our role as the leading educator of national security journalists by increasing our graduate offerings to create an entire track of studies that will result in a new certificate of specialization in national security journalism. At the same time, we will continue our commitment to provide undergraduate and graduate students with the knowledge and skills they need to understand and report on national and homeland security issues. Our many high-profile national security reporting projects provide models for other journalists and we feature this work and other national security reporting resources on our established website. Our enrollment in national security classes, increased web traffic and the continually evolving national security challenges demonstrate that there is a critical place for this program in the country’s civic dialogue.
