Neutrinos and Gamma-rays From Magnetic Reconnection in Blazars

Project: Research project

Project Details

Description

The detection of a high-energy neutrino coincident with the flaring Fermi blazar TXS 0506+056 provides the first evidence for the presence of relativistic hadrons in blazar jets. Thus, understanding how these cosmic accelerators work becomes more relevant than ever. Magnetic reconnection is a viable particle acceleration mechanism in jets as it can explain many aspects of blazar emission. However, there’s no robust prediction for the neutrino emission from reconnection. We propose to develop a lepto-hadronic blazar model by coupling large-scale simulations of reconnection in electron-proton plasmas with a radiative code that includes all relevant hadronic processes. With the proposed model, we will compute from first principles the multi-messenger emission from reconnection in blazar jets.
