To determine experimentally and justify theoretically the effect of crack-parallel stress on the fracture energy of concrete, formulate the consequences for fracture mechanics of concrete and other quasibrittle materials essential for infrastructure, critically examine the existing softwares, teach the new knowledge, and disseminate the conclusions and broader implications in the engineering community and beyond.
