Project Details

Description

As a NASA Einstein Fellow, Dr. Eftekhari will conduct an extensive observational follow-up campaign of transient events in the radio band, with a specific focus on supernovae (SNe) and fast radio bursts (FRBs) with precise localizations. Observations at late times will fill a critical gap in the duration-luminosity phase space for radio transients, and will be sensitive to both central engines as well as the mass-loss history of the progenitors in the centuries prior to explosion. Dr. Eftekhari’s work modeling both relativistic jets and non-relativistic outflows from diverse transient classes provides the necessary tools and experience to enable detailed studies of the mechanisms driving outflows and mass-loss from massive stars, the properties of the environments in which these events occur, and the details of their progenitors. First year main tasks will include (1) obtaining radio observations of 310 supernovae with the Very Large Array, (2) reducing and analyzing radio data for a small sample of Type IIn supernovae, culminating in a publication, and (3) reducing and analyzing Chandra X-ray data for a small sample of well-localized FRBs, culminating in a publication.
