Description

The Division of Vascular Surgery at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois, is an ACGME accredited surgical training program. Established by renowned leaders in the field, Drs. Bergan and Yao in 1974, the traditional fellowship training program has a total of two trainees per year, resulting in an aggregate of four fellows. The training experience of the fellows is gained during rotations at Northwestern Medicine in vascular surgery (12 months), interventional radiology (2 months), research (2 months), blood flow laboratory (2 months), as well as the Jesse Brown Veterans Administration Hospital (6 months). In addition, the integrated vascular residency was established by Dr. Eskandari in 2009 with ACGME approval. In this track, one resident per year is accepted into the program with 5 years of clinical training and an additional 2 years of optional research experience. There exists a strong collegial interaction between vascular surgery and other subspecialties (i.e. cardiology and radiology) which results in a robust training experience using cutting edge technologic tools. Additionally, the faculty members of the division (Drs. Ho, Hoel, Eskandari, Rodriguez, Tomita, and Vavra) are actively involved in a number of clinical trials ranging from carotid stenting and other peripheral interventions to aortic stent grafting. This type of environment lends itself to a busy clinical practice and an active clinical research program in which the fellows participate as well. All fellows complete their training with at least 2-3 peer-reviewed manuscripts, 2-3 book chapters, and 4-6 national presentations. Historically, those who have completed their training at Northwestern have predominately pursued careers in academic vascular surgery after achieving board certification in vascular surgery. Additionally, trainees gain a vast endoluminal experience allowing them to obtain privileges at future employment positions. To complement our
