Analyze systems-level energy and environmental benefits of co-optimization of liquid fuels and engines in the light-duty and heavy-duty transportation sectors. This study will provide results for the life-cycle energy use and emissions associated with the co-optimization of liquid fuels and engines in light-duty vehicles and heavy-duty trucks in order to guide research efforts and provide objective information to stakeholders in the biofuel and vehicle manufacturing sectors. This will be accomplished through tracking material and energy flows associated with scenarios for transportation energy requirements and vehicle adoption, using these flows to calculate life cycle energy use, emissions, and water use using Argonne’s GREET LCA model, and performing scale up analysis using scenario data together with Argonne’s Bioeconomy AGE model. The post-doctoral researcher will also investigate how co-optimizing fuels and engines to reduce energy consumption and emissions in transportation is complementary to electrification of light- and heavy-duty vehicles. The analysis will include the influence of producing fuels from biomass and other sources with fuel properties that enable improved engine performance on the sustainability of refineries, optimization of feedstock-to-fuel pathways, and examining air quality effects of expanded consumption of new liquid fuel blends alongside electrified vehicles.
