OpenSciEd High School Developers Consortium: Supporting Equity and Building Capacity through Collaborative Science Curriculum Development

Project: Research project

Project Details

Description

Northwestern University (NU) will support University of Colorado Boulder (CU) and BSCS on the development of the OpenSciEd high school physics course. The course is a year-long course, consisting of six units addressing the high school NGSS physical science performance expectations, and the Earth and Space Science performance expectations assigned to the Physics course in the HS Program Scope and Sequence. The work includes these phases: a. NU will support BSCS in working with the OpenSciEd State Steering Committee (SSC) to get their input on candidate phenomena and storyline for the unit. b. NU will participate with BSCS in a co-design process to revise the units after the field test. c. NU will participate in unit design teams led by BSCS to develop units responsive to the design specifications that implement the physics scope and sequence. d. NU will support BSCS with CU and the UT Dana Center to provide materials for the formal field test conducted by the UT Dana Center. e. NU will assist BSCS in working with the feedback from Physics field test teachers to identify needed revisions in the field test version. f. NU will assist BSCS in sharing the revision plan with the OpenSciEd SSC for feedback. g. NU will work with BSCS to revise the field test unit for a public final release version. The physics course includes units P1, P2, P3, P4, P5, and P6 to be developed during 2022-2023 as follows 2022 Unit Development: ● P1: Analyze field test Data, Develop and publicly release revised unit. ● P2: Develop field test version, Develop and conduct professional learning, Provide technical support for field test teachers. ● P3: Develop field test version, Develop and conduct professional learning, Provide technical support for field test teachers. ● P4: Begin development of field test version. ● P5: Finalize development of field test version, Develop and conduct professional learning, Provide technical support for field test teachers, Analyze field test Data, Develop and release revised unit. ● P6: Develop field test version. 2023 Unit Development: ● P1: No further work. ● P2: Analyze field test data, Develop and publicly release revised unit, ● P3: Analyze field test data, Develop and publicly release revised unit, ● P4: Complete field test development, Develop and conduct professional learning, Provide technical support for field test teachers, review data, revise following field test. ● P5: Continue production work and publicly release revised unit. ● P6: Complete field test development, Develop and conduct professional learning, Provide technical support for field test teachers, Analyze field test data, develop and release revised unit.
