Northwestern University, Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering, will perform the following tasks: (1) Experimental life-test measurements on solid oxide electrolysis cells will be carried out using impedance spectroscopy and post-test microstructural/microchemical evaluation (2) For oxygen electrodes, new materials and structures will be produced and accelerated life tests will be carried out at varying temperatures and current densities to observe effects such as coarsening. (3) For fuel electrodes, we will synthesize alternatives that have the potential to provide better stability than Ni-based materials, using cation substitutions in stable perovskites, and test their performance over time.
