This project is concerned with using gaseous plasmas to drive electrochemical reactions in liquids. Schatz and his group will be involved in theoretical and computational studies related to the experimental program at the University of Minnesota. One project is concerned with first principles modeling of electrons impinging on water interfaces, where he will use simulation methods to study electric field effects, solvated electrons, and Ag+ reduction to cluster ions. A second project involves electronic structure studies of the thermodynamics of Ag cluster ion formation from Ag and Ag+. A third project uses electronic structure methods to study electron-driven reduction of N2 and polymerization initiators in aqueous solution.
