Probabalistic Seismic Hazard Map testing in Nepal: A cooperative agreement between the USGS and Northwestern University

Project: Research project

Project Details

Description

Building on the momentum of an initial Earthquake Disaster Assistance Team (EDAT) mission to Nepal following the 25 April 2015 Gorkha earthquake, the Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA) has provided FY19-20 support to the USGS to provide training and technical support for Nepalese earthquake professionals. Recently, the lead Nepali partner agencies relayed an urgent request for assistance with the evaluation several different probabilistic seismic hazard assessment (PSHA) maps that have been developed for Nepal. Limited methodology exists to test PSHA maps; however, a novel and promising approach was recently developed by Recipient, with whom the USGS proposes to enter a cooperative agreement.
