Description

We request funding to support the 20th Annual Symposium of the NSF Astronomy and As- trophysics Postdoctoral Fellows (AAPFs). This symposium will be held on 8–9 January 2022 in conjunction with the winter meeting of the American Astronomical Society (AAS) in Salt Lake City, UT. The NSF AAPF program aims to prepare postdoctoral fellows for their future scientific careers by integrating research and teaching/outreach. The annual symposium provides (1) a platform for fellows to discuss their research and broader impacts projects, (2) exposure for the fellows and the fellowship program within the astronomical community, and (3) an open discussion of issues that are important to astronomers as they begin their careers. As outlined in the Project Description, this symposium will consist of: • Talks by current NSF AAPF fellows on their research and education projects. • Three discussion panels on 1) best practices for using virtual tools in research & outreach; 2) the Astro 2020 Decadal Survey, featuring committee and panel members; and 3) and applying for permanent positions inside and outside academia. • Two keynote talks focused on progress and future directions in the field by astronomers with exceptional track records combining research and education and public outreach, with a focus on the priorities of the Astro 2020 Decadal Survey. • Opportunities for open discussion between current NSF AAPF fellows and the broader as- tronomical community in order to foster opportunities for mentoring and new collaborations.
