Project: Research project

Project Details

Description

This Statement of Work will be conducted pursuant to the terms and conditions of that Research Agreement ("Agreement") by and between Northwestern University (“Northwestern”) and the Board of Education of the City of Chicago (the “Board” or “Sponsor”), commonly known as the Chicago Public Schools (“CPS”). Defined terms used in this Statement of Work will have the same meanings as those ascribed to such terms in the Agreement. Northwestern’s Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (“MRSEC”) Research Experience for Teachers program (“Project”) will provide an opportunity for two CPS teachers (“Teachers”) to engage in research, develop a professional network that includes Northwestern researchers and teachers, learn about recent developments in science and technology, and explore ways to transfer this knowledge to the classroom. The Project will be 8 weeks long starting on June 23, 2016 and continuing through August 15, 2016. During the Project, the Teachers will attend an orientation, perform research, attend weekly seminars led by Northwestern faculty, attend a field trip to the Argonne National Laboratory, attend a networking event, and attend a closing symposium where Teachers will present their research work done throughout the Project. A portion of the Teachers’ time spent researching will be allotted to the development of a curriculum concept for sharing their research experiences at their CPS schools. Specifically, the project objectives include: - For the Teachers - professional development and a final product that can be easily implemented in the teacher's CPS classroom. - For CPS - to understand the Teachers’ professional goals and follow up during the school year with continued support for implementing and leading Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (“STEM”) activities at the school level. CPS teachers who would like to participate in the Project will go through the regular application/selection process on Northwestern’s MRSEC-RET system. CPS will not pre-select teachers, but will advertise the opportunity to all teachers who meet the selection criteria and encourage them to apply. CPS will approve the teachers that are chosen by Northwestern before Northwestern extends offers to participate in the Project.
