RaceRunning for fitness in an elementary school setting: pilot testing and program development

Project: Research project

Project Details

Description

The goal of this study is to pilot an after school running program for children with mobility challenges using RaceRunner running frames. The program consists of twice-weekly after school sessions of 60-90 minutes each, and will occur over 8-10 weeks, where we will focus on sport-based youth development principles – using both physical interventions focused on elevating heart rate and increasing endurance, as well as social/behavioral programming targeted towards team building and self-image as a runner. At the end of the training, all participants will be encouraged to participate in a community 5K run with their teammates using the RaceRunners. We will be evaluating if there are changes to participants’ fitness, such as resting heart rate, changes to participants’ function, such as how far they can walk in 6 minutes, and/or changes to their self-perception and how they feel about themselves.
