REU SITE: RESEARCH EXPERIENCE FOR UNDERGRADUATES IN NANOSCALE SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING PROPOSAL

Undergraduate research experiences have been shown to enhance participants’ inquiry and analysis skills, ability to read and understand primary literature, communicate complicated ideas, and effectively work in teams. Research has shown that participants in these programs also acquire a toleration for obstacles faced in the research process, learn how knowledge is gained, and increase self-confidence and readiness for more demanding research.3 REU programs, in particular, provide unique experiences for students who might not otherwise have the opportunity, and encourage participation by students traditionally underrepresented in the sciences and engineering.
This proposal requests funds to establish a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Site for Nanoscale Science and Engineering at Northwestern University. This new site will build upon previous success (EEC-1359004, March 1, 2014-February 28, 2017), incorporate lessons learned, and leverage the proven strength of nanoscale research and engineering to engage diverse students from different science and engineering backgrounds. The proposed program will be housed at Northwestern’s International Institute for Nanotechnology (IIN), an umbrella organization that unites over $1 billion in nanotechnology research, infrastructure, and educational programs. With over 240 faculty members from 32 departments, a history of providing meaningful undergraduate research experiences, and skilled administrative support, the IIN will provide strong foundational support for the proposed program.
