Description
This proposal outlines a three season stage one archaeological project at the site of Aventura
in northern Belize. Aventura is a PreColumbian Maya city that has a roughly 2500 year history
(1000 BCE to 1500 CE) spanning the Preclassic, Classic, and Postclassic periods of Maya history.
The proposed research will address two key issues in archaeology: (1) understanding the
social, political, and economic factors that can foster longevity in cities and (2) understanding
the history of a city that survived the decline of state-level society. Settlement survey,
test pitting, and the horizontal excavation of three households are the methods that will
be used to examine the longevity of settlement at Aventura.
