RTG: Interdisciplinary Training in Quantitative Biological Modeling

Northwestern University’s Department of Engineering Sciences & Applied Mathematics (ESAM)
proposes an interdisciplinary Research Training Grant (RTG) focused on quantitative biological
modeling. In this RTG, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students and undergraduates will gain experience
in mathematical modeling, numerical methods, and data analysis relevant to biological
problems. Trainees will further develop their skill sets by performing research in collaborative
teams on current problems in experimental and computational biology; each will have mentors
from both applied mathematics and a biological discipline (Neurobiology, Molecular Biosciences,
Biomedical and Mechanical Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering and Preventive
Medicine). Trainees will gain further experience from ongoing research projects beyond their own
through group meetings at which progress in various projects is shared and discussed. Research internships
outside of Northwestern will also be available to broaden trainees’ perspectives. Trainees
will gain both depth and breadth in quantitative modeling in the biological sciences.
